The discussion keeps coming back to the mechanical ability of the truck. Component capabilities are easy to find on the Internet. And I agree they do not seem to jive with the ratings the manufacturers place on the trucks we buy. I don't think there is widespread disagreement about that point as the numbers there are as clear as they are for payloads, tire ratings, etc.
The disagreement is about whether to heed the weight ratings imposed by manufacturers or decide to use some other determinate. Seems to me folks keep mixing the two. It is not about the manner in which a state imposes taxes or how much someone is towing or how they decide the weight their truck can tow or haul.
The manufacturer puts a weight rating on their product and backs it with printed warnings in the owner's manual. Truck camper manufacturers also post the same warnings not to exceed ratings in their brochures and other propaganda. Either you decide to follow them or you don't. Personally I don't care what anyone decides. People here are adults and make choices. We do that when we drive, own firearms, etc. I don't understand what feels to me like a need of some folks to convince others of the rationale behind their decision. What am I missing?
