While the location of the water connection in relationship to the heater vent may be less than desirable, the OP's use of a 90 degree fitting at the connection surely added to the problem. If a normal hose was connected directly to the connection, it would naturally bow out well past the area where the heat would damage the hose. Rotating that 90 fitting 90 degrees counter-clockwise and it won't happen again.
I did a similar thing several years ago. The waste hose from my Macerator was carelessly laid in front of the exhaust pipe for the Aqua Hot. Melted a nice hole in that hose. Now the Macerator hose is joined together by a hose fitting and a couple of hose clamps. It serves as a constant reminder to not drop the hose in front of the exhaust.
