Wow! that really bites! I also agree, that's a bad design. Not much you can do about it now though except learn how to work around it going forward. Hope you can get your repairs done quickly and doesn't cost more than your deductible out-of-pocket! Good luck!
Yours is a good example of why I don't leave my water hose hooked up to my camper. My hook up is no where near the heater, but the possibility of hose failure is a risk I don't care to take. Over pressure, under pressure, hoses breaking at the spigot, you name it. We had a hose blow up once from just laying in the sun. It blew up like a balloon and then broke open. Fortunate, we were right there when it happened.
This just reinforces my practice of filling my fresh water tank, and pumping water from there. I use the campground faucet to fill my fresh tank, then unhook the garden hose from the camper. I may leave it laying on the ground, but not attached to the camper. Then I pump from my on-board pump and water tank. It might be a bit noisy when the pump turns on, and it does mean watching how much water is being used to fill the fresh tank again. But after a short while, it just becomes part of the process of camping. No biggie.
This is something you may want to reconsider once you get your camper fixed, fill the water tank and run the on board tank. Leave the garden hose off.
