Absolutely correct in nohurry's response here. Mine is just the opposite. I don't haul stuff that needs to be accessed from an open bed, so the shell works great for me! Keeps everything dry and I feel more secure than just sitting in an open bed.
If I have a need to haul something tall, or a load of dirt, or gravel, I have a 5 x 10 foot bed utility trailer I can tow. So, for me, no need to remove the shell.
FYI, I purchased a 'construction' style topper. It has full length side doors with 2 full length shelves inside those doors. Great for storing stuff and not having to climb inside the bed for anything. When we go grocery shopping, we always put our groceries there. It's much easier getting out than, even, the back seat!
I ordered mine with a ladder rack so we can carry our canoe also. Actually, one side of the "tool boxes" is dedicated for only the canoe items, rope, floating seats, life jackets, and my outriggers, paddles, and small thermos jugs that are water tight to carry billfold and cell phone and keys in. (it floats too so will never "go down with the ship" if we flip over!)
