I’m looking for some guidance as this is new to me. Based on what I read I bought a tounge weight scale and here are my numbers.
Suv: 2017 Expedition el
GVWR: 7760
Front: 3700 Rear GAWR: 4300
Heavy duty tow package
Lt tires
Sumo springs
Cargo Capacity: 1489
700 pounds in passengers and gear
Trailer
23’8
Weight 5500 (wet)
Tounge 725
Does cargo of 1489 count a driver and gas? Seems like I’m real close here. Thoughts?
The relevant numbers here are GVWR and GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating). In theory if you pull up on a scale with all 4 vehicle tires on it you should never be over your GVWR so everything in or supported by the vehicle counts.
If you put the vehicle and trailer on the scale you should never exceed GCWR. You would have to look up the Ford towing specs to get that number and instructions for setting up your weight distributing hitch.
You could make a good case that the rating are for the worst possible situation and that you exercise a little extra caution and go a little slower it is not terrible to go a little over.
