Jul 21, 2014Carpenter ants create satellite colonies which are nest that are completely separated from the parent nest. Bombing might kill the nest you can see, but it may not reach a satellite nest. An exterminator would probably be your best bet.
You could always try to bait them. I've had very good results with Terro Liquid Ant Killer. It's a mix of a sweet liquid and borax and not very dangerous since the primary ingredient is borax. The ants suck it up the sweet liquid then share it with other ants in the colony and on the trail. The borax causes gas that they can't get rid of and this eventually kills them. The borax works slowly, like 1 to 3 days, so it gives the ants plenty of time to share it amongst the entire colony. I've taken down an entire colony with just a few drops. It's kind of fun watching them all gather around and eating. They gather around the liquid like it's a drive in. It's worked well on crazy ants which are terrible down here and incredibly difficult to get rid of. The only caveat is that it only works on ants attracted to sweets. It doesn't work well for ants that are attracted to proteins like grease ants. It should work for carpenter ants.
