Most travel trailer bumpers and frames are very weak. Just adding a spare tire is usually quite enough of a load. Adding one or two 50lb. gas cans is nothing that I would do.
Carrying a cheap, empty plastic gas can on the rear bumper held in place with a rotting bungee cord will serve to keep some tailgaters away, and if it is still there when you run out of gas, you can hitch hike to a station.
