I'm going to give a different view to this whole thread and idea. I think carrying the extra weight that a couple of five gallons cans would be is a bad idea with this combination of trailer and tow vehicle. Placing that much weight on the back of this trailer is going to lighten the tongue weight a significant amount, the same as adding it to the front is going to increase it by an equal amount. Adding the weight to the back of the vehicle ( mounting the can "Jeep-CJ style" ) would add to the already overloaded Tribute rear suspension.
I hate to be the one who throws water on the party here, but that is a marginal tow vehicle for that trailer. Adding another nearly 100 pounds to the situation is not a good idea.
....ouch. Sorry. Just trying to tell it like it is.
I would tend to agree but folks will insist AND do it anyways.. Just count and read all the bicycles on the trailer bumper posts for example..
I would rather have MORE weight on the trailer tongue even if it overloads an already overloaded tow vehicle..
It is why I suggested the fuel station mounted on the tongue..
The OP does not HAVE to fill the tank full, just 5 gallon would most likely do the trick (50 miles at 10 MPG)..
Tank weighs about 10 lbs and 5 gallons of fuel about 40 lbs so all told adding 50 lbs to the tongue.
This is better than putting two 5 gallon jerry cans on the bumper which would be 80 lbs not including the cans.. That 80 lbs would remove about 1/3 of the weight of the fuel from the tongue or about 25 lbs which if the tongue is at 10% could spell disaster for sway..
