If your dead set on the Jerry can i would mount it on the trailer tongue. Personally, I wouldn't mount it on the rear just in-case of a rear end collision. Make sure your locking it to the trailer AND locking the cap itself, because people are jerks and wouldnt hesitate to borrow your fuel... 5 Gal should easily get you to the next fuel stop...
