Geodude, your set-up is similiar to mine and I have a question. I also run the tie-down straps to the tow hooks which works pretty good but I've been considering replacing the straps with something solid like a threaded rod or cable with a turnbuckle on each side for tightening it up. Wanted to ask in case someone else tried it and it didn't work.
I have the Darby T-bar (2½" square tube on top) that a 2 x 2" aluminum tube fits in. I simply slide it out a couple of feet, load the front of the kayak onto this extended part, then put the other end on the roof rack, and then move the front of the kayak into position. Then, the extender tube goes out the other side and I do the same for the other one. The 2x2 aluminum is what is used for screening in a pool or porch.
Its raining good now or I'd get a few pix to show it.
