I leave mine open pretty much all the time. Even when running AC (probably should close them). Only time I close the bathroom one is when I am dry camping and running the rear fantastic fan with the front bedroom windows open. If I don't close the bathroom vent, I don't get enough air moving to cool the bedroom.
I have found soot in my bathroom this year. But we've had it bad for fires and smoke. Never seen a drop of water.
