Center of Gravity

A friend of mine is considering a truck camper among other types of RV's and neither of us can figure out something regarding Center of Gravity. The vast majority of manufacturers list one measurement but Lance lists two in their model specs. A front center of gravity and a rear center of gravity. Why does one manufacturer list two while the others only list one?

Not because COG doesn't matter, but because ALL manufacturers design their campers to have a reasonable COG.

If Lance made their big 1172 model with a COG of 96" from the front of the truck bed, THAT would be a problem, and you most certainly would be hearing people express regret over buying it because of COG... The COG is 60" back, which is only a few of inches behind the axle on most 8' bed trucks.
  • There is only one COG so as long as you know where to measure it from, it doesn't matter which you use.

Several years ago Lance spec’d their COG from the rear, which was defined as the place where the rear of the camper touched the back of the bed. Pretty much alll others measured from the front of the box. Now it seems Lance specs both.
  • Lance lists front and rear COG.
Looking at 1172 model - Front is 60" when rear is 36"
That adds to 96"=8' standard bed has.
Obviously with no picture it is not quite clear, while beds are not 8 ft even.

You can’t do anything about the measurement other than moving weight inside the TC or in the holding tanks. In normal practice, all TCs made for long beds go on long bed trucks. Short bed TCs go on short bed trucks. Don’t overthink it.
