I just bought a new champion 4000/3500 watt generator the one with the 30 amp rv plug on it and plug my new 31ft trailer with one 13.5 btu ac and it would not run the traler also the trailer had a dead battery if that matters does anybody know why?

  • I just unhooked the battery, generator will run the run the lights and microwave fine but when i turn the ac on with everything else off it will come on now but the generator falls on its face and wont recover, i am at sea level!
  • That's what mine does when trying to run the AC while charging at the same time. My battery isn't dead but it still requires bulk charging for at least a hour a day before I can even try the AC. Then again I'm doing this at 9200 ft or more and loose up to 30% of the rated output.
  • The only thing on in the trailer was 2 lights, the converter and ac it would run llights etc. fine but when you turned the ac on the would pull down way down and would not throw a breaker! Thanks

All of the power put out by the Champion is available thru the RV plug.
  • What was it doing? Blowing breaker? No output?

The owners manual says the RV plug should handle 3500 watts.
What else was turned on in the trailer?
Hot water heater draws a lot of watts and you may not be able to run AC and water heater at same time.
See the wattage chart on page 12.

Of course you should first fix you known problem of bad battery.
Good luck. It should work for you, but some power management may be required.

  • The Champ should run your 13.5 AC, mine does even at high altitude UNLESS there is a big draw like the RVs converter charging the battery. You said the battery is dead so the converter will draw a lot of power for a while. After a while it will slow down as the battery gets closer to 90% charged and your AC will run. You could also shut off the converter.

Was the battery charged when you bought the rig? If so did you disconnect it or charged it sense? Even just sitting a battery will be drained by the alarms.

You can plug in the trailer or remove the battery and put it on a stand alone auto charger. Take it to a auto parts store if you don't know if it is good and they will test is.
