Changing fuel filters

I have 2015 ram 6.7 cummins, after changing the fuel filters i forgot to prime the fuel but i started cranking on the engine right away coz I forgot.
Is that bad?
After realizing I suddenly stopped the engine and primed it turning on off the key like 4 times.
I drove the truck about 3-4 miles and seems fine so far.

  • Where or when did the OP state he/she used sub prime filters?

Otherwise, i see nothing wrong with what happened. Any diesel with an electric pump of some sort will prime itself.

No problem. After watching a couple youtube vids, I discovered your experience if pretty normal.

What I do, is change the front filter first. Turn the key on, wait about 5 second. Crank for about 2-3 seconds, won't start, turn key off. Repeat: Same thing happens on the second attempt. Usually starts on the third attempt. Repeat process or rear filter.

BTW, you can get the Genuine Fleetguard (Cummins) Stratopore Filters off Amazon for about $78 for the pair.

You're fine. There's nothing to prime. And do not pre-fill the filters.

True. Brands like Fram and Napa Gold have 1/3 to 1/2 the number of pleats and will clog much faster.

  • No problem, Common Rail self bleeds.
Next time after you change the filter (dont prefill) just turn the ign on without starting. The fuel pump will prime the system so you don't have to grind on the starter.
One of the few great things about a modern diesel.
  • It'll be fine. With our heavy equipment, also modern DEF Cummins the mechanics now days do not fill the fuel filters nor the oil filters. They say Cummins does not recommend it anymore mainly because of contamination during filling.
