I would take a look at the fluid...if it's still bright pink and doesn't smell burnt, you could probably go a while on it. If it's starting to look a little brown and smell a little then a change would help. Best bet is to drop the pan, change the filter and refill per factory spec.
Your trans with the 4.8L engine should be the 4L60E 4-speed. All Gm transmissions (except the Allison) now call for Dexron VI fluid, available at any auto parts store. Do not use any Dex/Merc or other fluid. The pan gasket should be re-usable.
It's an easy job to drop the pan, drain the fluid, snap in the new filter and refill, only drawback is its a little messy when the fluid drains out. I would stay away from the quickie flush places that may use a generic fluid. IMO, it's more valuable to drop the pan and change the filter than it is to flush 100% of the fluid. You will have 3/4 of the fluid replaced by dropping the pan, and the remaining 25% of teh old fluid won't hurt anything.
