The real answer is "it depends".
Is it a relay isolator, or a diode type?
To get good charging beefing up the wire is usually necessary. The "regulator" in the tow vehicle "sees" the starter battery and throttles down the charging. Plus there are parasitic loads. You may only get 2 or 3 amps of charging per hour while driving.
