I'm following this argument with some interest. I frankly don't know enough about this subject to have an opinion, one way or another.
My concern would be that it might develop enough ac ripple to actually damage the engine control computer or other computer controls.
Your bus was old enough that that wouldn't have been a problem. Assuming the diodes didn't actually fail totally, did you ever check to see if you had ac ripple?
