The discussion of 2 alternators (very unusual) is outside the scope of this topic, but I would assume that 2 alternators would be independent (except for ground), so the second alternator could charge a second battery bank at any rate.
I know that on boats, a dual alternator system has a completely separate alternator with it's own multi-stage voltage regulator hooked up directly to the house system.
I was under the impression that on ambulances and other trucks that need a dual alternator system, the two alternators are integrated into the single vehicle system, and the second alternator's function was to increase the output so as to be able to run electrical equipment that needed more power than a single alternator could provide.
But I am not positive about that, and I could be wrong.
