A heavy duty gasoline engine will not have trouble hauling any size truck camper currently made. Once you add a towed car or trailer behind the camper you will start to see advantages of using a diesel.
I certainly agree that a diesel makes it seem more effortless, but a gas truck will get a heavy load where it’s going.
Remember we didn’t have these ultra-torquey diesel pickups 20 years ago. People still had 4500 pound campers and big heavy trailers back then.
I ran my ‘86 GMC 4x4 crewcab dually with an 11.5 footer and 10,000 trailer, scaling over 22,000, over plenty of mountains. It always got there and in fact I still own the truck as an emergency backup, because it’s so reliable to this day. That’s zero electronics for ya’.
There is a notion these days that you NEED a diesel to carry a heavy load.
You don’t. They will do it faster and easier, for sure. That’s why I have one.
But my old 454 gas truck will haul anything my diesel will, and it’s not even near as powerful as the new gas trucks.
That’s what gears are for.
