Something many have over looked are higher bed rails, OR a a lower bed floor.
My new Ram the bed is 1-1/2" to 2" deeper than the 2001, yet the rails are almost the same height at the tailgate.
I didn't need to adjust my 5er hitch, as the Reese picture frame adapter raised it about 2" so I still have about 6" rail clearance.
It did allow me to lift my tool box about 1-1/2" so I can get a 4'X8' sheet of plywood in the bed and close the tailgate.
