Rather than listen to the uninformed, go to www.canamrv.ca in Canada and read Andy Thompson's info. He's been setting up mini vans for towing for many years
Having towed a small travel trailer with a mini-van I am informed. I've towed two different trailers with vehicles very close to limits so I am VERY informed. More important I have experience. Yes, both rigs were setup perfectly safe. Both were able to tow the trailers in question.
One big concern I have with CanAm is liability. Canada is not nearly as litigious of a society as the US. In the US should you get into an injury or death related accident while towing and the opposing attorney find out you were towing over weight, you will have civil liabilities that may devastate you financially. Will CanAm assume liability for the recommendations they make? Likely not.
I will say this, there is a night and day difference between towing with marginal cushion and towing with an appropriately sized vehicle with margin in the specs. Having experience I think if the OP follows through he will be buying a new truck or SUV in 12-18 months.
