Hi Salem, yes that year duramax has a Diesel Particulate Filter. These were mandated since 2007 and all truck manufacturers had them implemented by 2007.5 model years or 2008 model years. Chevy did this in 2007.5. What is not present in 2008 is the DEF or Diesel Exhaust Fluid. This system was later added in 2010 to meet NOx standards, however the DPF was used to meet Particulate Matter standards. Hope this clears things up. Sounds like your son will just need to drive the vehicle around for a good 30 to 40 miles. To also confirm, you will have a canister under your truck that looks like a muffler, but there should be 2 sensors coming out of it. 1 sensor near the inlet side and 1 sensor near the outlet side.
I only know this because I was looking at a duramax back in 2007. Decided that I didn't need a truck back then because I didn't own a house. Figure'd I'd buy a sports car, pay it off before I bought a house and then buy a truck. Then the whole Housing Stimulus thing came in and well now I own a home and have a truck and am now looking to get an RV for a hobby :).
