Cleaning old school canvas

My PUP is from 1983 and has actual old school canvas, not that plasticy stuff that more modern PUPs have that people also call canvas (not sure what the material is called). What's the best way to clean old school canvas?

I used to clean my pop-up canvas with soap and water, soap not a detergent. I used to take a bar of Ivory soap and grate it up using a cheese grater and mix it into warm water to break down the soap. I would use the soap/water mixture to clean the canvas, then rinse well and let dry.

If you have any mildew or discoloration, it may be lightened in color, but will most likely never fully go away.

Does it have a wax/oil based waterproof coating? If so, you will want to recoat (especially if you use soap). You can get coating stuff and directions at an outdoor shop.
