I use ONLY Mr. Clean Magic Erasers on my awning. Been using them for years and years now.
Make the eraser good and wet, but not dripping. Wipe the awning in small areas. Follow with a dry cloth. Move on to the next small area.
If the first wipe does not get it all, then wipe a second time. Do not scrub, just wipe. The gunk will melt off.
And the chemicals left on the awning will prevent new black spots from forming. It won't keep bugs off, so every now and then, a slight touch up to remove dead bugs. But that's all.
Remember, do not scrub, just wipe. Awning will look new when your done.
Same as the a msb1766 said about the top; use a long handled brush to push the eraser around on the top side. I use a painters wand with one of those fluffy RV brushes. I make the eraser dripping wet when doing the top.
And ... I always clean my awning when camping. Never at home.
I just did mine last week-end. Won't have to touch it again for months now, unless a bug gets rolled up in it.
