Does using a WD hitch and surge brakes work? I've heard it has it's challenges. If you convert the trailer to electric over hydraulic it will work. Some added expense but totally worth it.
No, surge brakes do not work properly with a WDH. The OP thinks tongue weight will be about 500 lbs - That should be possible without a WDH but will require a Class V receiver to handle that weight with an extension.
It's not that the OP NEEDS a WD hitch...but it would shift some axle weight forward, which should help the handling.
We use an Equalizer brand WD hitch with our Airstream...why do you think a WD hotch would not work w/surge brakes?
I am trying to picture this....I don't see why not? Ultimately you just put the hitch on the ball? Why would surge matter?

When the trunnions/spring bars shift the weight off the tongue, the master cylinder in the coupler cannot not be properly activated during deceleration to apply the brakes. It reduces the deceleration forces on the coupler due to the torque forces.
If the OP had electrically controlled brakes, I would also recommend a WDH. It works well on my setup and I have 1.5x the tongue weight on my SRW.
