Cold (Fridid) Weather Start Diesel?????

I am struggling with a gas vs diesel dilemma for myself. (Most recent generation of diesel). A concern that I have is cold weather start. For example, I am in the middle of nowhere deer hunting. It has been -10 all day and the truck has not moved since 6 am. Assuming I treated the diesel and I have blended fuel, will it reliably start? Is this a valid concern?

Yes, all three will perform well in cold temps.
You have to understand that these vehicles are marketed to industries that operate in those climates and do so without issue.
  • My old non turbo 7.3 was a bear if it wasn't plugged in. The 6.7 cummins has been flawless. I don't even worry about it. I do cycle the pre heater a few times when it gets into the teens or less. She has always stared right up and settled into a nice idle.

Also, for those of you that live where it is really cold, do you use blended fuel or straight number 1 diesel fuel?
AND I just assume that you add Howes or Power Service additive.
  • as long as the fuel is properly treated to avoid JELLING.. you will be perfectly fine.. go for it..

What he said...I have had several GM diesels from the 6.2 on up. Never had a starting problem even after sitting for days in the cold before trying to turn them over. This would be the least of my worries with the modern diesel.
  • I would choose a modern day diesel engine over a gas engine for cold weather starting.
