Are you talking New purchase from a dealer, or private party transaction?
If you're buying new from a dealer, I wouldn't have any qualms about putting a deposit before leaving home (assuming dealer is reputable). I'd hate to drive and find out unit was sold while I was en route from a long ways away...
Most likely they'll want to do some sort of written purchase agreement at time of deposit. This should show your deposit amount and method of payment. Again, if your dealership is reputable, I wouldn't be concerned about it.
