Gave birth to 6 kids within 9 years. Started camping with a HUGE (largest they made) Coleman pop up tent trailer that slept 8-10 back in the early 90's. Pulled that one with a 5.7 L GMC Safari minivan. No problem at all. Got sick of having to crank it open each time we had to load it, set up for camp, and then unload when we got home.
Upgraded to a Fleetwood 30 ft "lite" Terry. Slept 8. Real nice before it started to rot out within 3 years. Regardless, our Suburban 2500 pulled that thing without hesitation.
Tent Camping... As a mom of 6 little ones while camping, I would never consider tent camping. That would like asking me to do my job that I do at home (day to day with the kids) with the equivalent surroundings of 150 years ago. Nope... not enough wine in the world to get through a weekend of tent camping.
Tent Trailer... Nice way to begin if they truly were an inexpensive option, but now adays the units are priced way to close to a hard side TT. Might as well jump in for a few grand more and buy a TT
Travel Trailers... Great way to see the country... but be careful what you buy. Not all campers are comparable. I got a brand new one that leaked within 3 year. Still loved it for 10 years total before we could no longer enter it without masks due to the back mold. ( 3 kids in college, we now downsized to a TC)
Fifth Wheels... never owned one, but they are just way to big for me. Intimidating I suppose.
Motorhomes... I have always wanted one, but not conducive with the kids, being that I couldn't drag a vehicle that would be large enough to accommodate us once we got the the location.
If I could go back 20 years ago, I would buy a FULL fiberglass "egg" camper like a scamp, casita, trillion. Just my 2 cents anyways... but GOODLUCK TO YOU. Your kids will thank you when they get older. Trust me on this....
