Have read a lot about this topic. Some engineering types believe the issue lies with Takata's use of ammonium nitrate as the propellant to inflate the bags. The theory is ammonium nitrate becomes unstable if it gets wet or absorbs moisture, which is true, but how does that occur in a container that is sealed until its deployed? Apparently the ammonium nitrate burn is more of detonation than a rapid burn which results in the rupture/fragmentation of the canister. Have also read there is a more expensive chemical available for the purpose and it is used by TRW in the airbags they manufacture. Forget the chemical name, but it is supposed to be a more stable substance when used in this application.
