Nothing beats a phone call. We almost always call in our reservations, and get a confirmation number from a private campground.
With the State Parks it is sometime easier to use their reservation systems.
We had reservations at park, they called about three week ahead and said they could not accommodate us as they had over booked several spots that were being renovated and were not completed in time.
They did give us the number of some other parks and we did manage a to squeak in to another park.
