Exactly, although technically you can be cited by the real weight police its a very remote possibility. You would usually need to be hauling commercially and over the classification limit, and get pulled over and weighed, its a very small chance of ever happening.
I have had 2500s that by weight should have been a class 4a, registered as a 3 for years. Nothing illegal about it. If there was, a lot of those guys who you sit in front of in the back offices at the dealer would be out of a job. Its done all the time. Did you ever notice that once the weight classification sticker on your new trucks windshield, installed by the dealer, falls off or fades out over time, you never get or have to get another?
