"Weight they were hauling" is spot on. Chances are if, and its a big if, you're pulled over, weighed, and cited, the amount of the fine and costs is going to be less than you saved in registration costs over 2 or 3 years. That is unless your grossly overweight as in thousands of pounds, as that's the way the fine scale is structered.
Its sort of the same as the yearly trailer inspection. Haul it off to the RV or trailer dealer every year and drop $60 along with your time to have them look at the lights, pull a wheel, and pop the breakaway pin out, or forget about it. The fine and costs if cited is $105.50 and you'll probably get a warning and no fine, with a stipulation to have it done within 10 days.
That all said, the RV.net certified lawyers and law abiding citizens can let loose LOL.
OP, as far as the PA pike their classification numbers are not a match with the PA DMV weight classes. Your F450 will get the PA turnpike class 2 toll on the pike. 7001 to 15000 lbs, two axle. You do not have to register anything with them unless you mean adding the F450 to your EZ pass account, which has nothing to do with weight. At the older toll plazas you might squeak through at the class 1 passenger vehicle rate.

Are you sure they were not popping the haulers going back and forth between Mohegan Sun and Tioga Downs? Those are classified commercial. I have seen them do that out west near the Meadows. It's a decent cash cow, or cash horse.
