Don't forget the older diesels. If you are patient and keep looking, low miles units in great shape do come up for sale. A few years ago I bought a 2004.5 Dodge Cummins 2500 with less than 10,000 miles on it. When I decided to start packing an overhead camper I wanted something more stable so I sold it with only 32,000 miles on it. And bought my current 2004 Dodge Cummins dually 6 speed manual with only 52,000 miles on the odometer. It hauls my Bigfoot effortlessly and even towing the Jeep over all our mountain passes I average 14.3 mpg hand calculated. No pollution control **** to worry about, rock solid dependable, and the effortless power makes me smile as I drive along.
I also have a rig with the V-10 gas engine. Over the last 50,000 miles it has never gotten better than 12 mpg - and that's running empty. So unless diesel gets A LOT more expensive than regular, I'm still coming out ahead. But around here the difference is about 40 cents a gallon.
