What I would add to the cost is time you spend pulling more often to gas station and fact that having shorter range with gas engine, you are forced to fill at the price they have at location, when most of the time with diesel you can drive additional 50 miles for cheaper fuel.
I drove my diesel sedan from Vegas to San Francisco area last week, only to find fuel pricing here $1 more per gallon. But knowing that in advance and having space in the trunk, I come with 4 cans of diesel, so I will make 1300 miles trip without paying higher prices.
Cans are not very convenient way to fill, but I use them at convenient time, so that makes for more comfort as well.
Thanks Kayteg1. With a 48 gal tank, diesel or gas, I HAVE to stop to use the facilities anyway, long before I NEED to fill up. We have lots of preferred stops in the first 300 miles from home that work for fuel AND bodily needs. After that , it is the gasbuddy app. Rest stops are rare on non-interstate highways.
