Gasoline fuel pumps that are in the tanks of GMs also don't like being low on fuel. I don't know if that is on their heavy-duty trucks or not. Gasoline systems can also varnish if you live in an area with ethanol/low pollution fuel.
Long bed Fords have 38 gallon tanks, but not all usable unless you harpoon the tank.
As far as damage to the fuel system on diesels go, I wonder if DEF helps. I use additives for my year truck. There are also other mods to help.
I find it interesting that some people have a lot of issues with injectors and some never do. Of course, some people have problems with all of their vehicles. One of life's mysteries.
