Gasoline engines in tow/haul can gear down and have engine braking. Diesels need exhaust breaks because of the way diesel engine combustion works.

Here is one discussion on driving an RV with V10 down a mountain. Basically use tow/haul and use the brake to go to the speed you want to maintain. http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php?topic=79563.0
