After a recent 9000+ mile trip from California to Halifax, Nova Scotia and back, I've gotten pretty fed up with the excessive price of diesel. On average it was 10-15 cents more per gallon across the country. Its not that bad everywhere: On our recent trip to Alaska and back, the price for diesel in Canada most places was about the same as for regular gas (within a cent or two per liter)
We bought our diesel truck used with the camper on it. I love the low-speed torque. But if I were buying new, I doubt if I would pay all the extra up front for a diesel -- not to mention the higher maintenance cost.
