Converter hum

Hi, I have a 2017 Jayco Jayflight. It just began humming from the fuse box when I hooked up today. I read some comments and checked the converter voltage and it is at 13.6. This is just where it should be. The thing is humming and I don't know what to do now. Any suggestions.
  • What was the battery voltage before you plugged in?
Give it 48 hours and see if the hum (fan?) quiets down.
Lights or accessories may also trigger the fan to come on.

What is the model number? Some have a tendency to make a high pitched squeal with no load.

You haven't provided any details about the converter itself but if it's a WFCO it will have a 2 yr manufacturer's warranty ... if so, have your dealer identify whether this is indeed normal operation and if not have the unit replaced under warranty. Other brands will likely have similar warranties.
  • If you have fan noise in a WFCO, consider replacing the plain bearing fan with a ball bearing fan. I did just that and found the price is just pennies more. Just think of all the pennies WFCO saved over the years!
  • Many of us have upgraded the cheaper WFCO converter to a Progressive Dynamics converter for better performance. PD makes easy to install upgrades. There are several threads on this WFCO converter topic in the forum.

My 2010 TT WFCO converter would never change its output voltage - always at 13.6 even when the batteries were fully charged - not good for the batteries.

A better converter will vary the voltage depending on the need - 14.4 for quick charging a depleted battery, 13.6 for normal demand, 13.2 for trickle charging a fully charged battery.
  • Yes, it would help if we know the brand, model and amp rating of the converter.

My prior American Enterprizes 2 stage converter would go into cement mixer mode in the middle of the night. :M The fans were shot.

I replaced it with a Progressive Dynamics converter and there is no noise at all. I really do not know if the fans ever run as there is no noise. It has variable speed fans that change speed as needed and it is 3 stage charging with a desulfate mode.It will kick into boost mode on a genny hook up or when you press the charge wizard button to send it into boost or any other mode.

Not all converters hum or mix cement in the middle of the night, but some do. The PD so far does not hum or make noise for the last 10 years since I installed it. I'm sold on them.

    Hope this helps

  • Over the past 30 years I've had many TT's (too many actually, that's why we're broke). Anyway some of the converters hummed some didn't. Had nothing to do with the fan, the cheaper ones have a 60 cycle hum cause they are cheaply made (read, China). Had a WFCO in an '04 Tahoe that hummed a lot, the better one in our '05 Trail Cruiser is completely silent. Never let the hum bother me, helps silence the other voices in my head. NOw I have to listen to them.
