That is totally off base. Like already said, some materials are lighter and stronger (pound for pound) like aluminum, carbon fiber, titanium, but cost more for the same "strength". If you are comparing apples to apples, than obviously the one that weighs more is more sturdy. Once you start comparing apples to oranges, you can throw the heavier vs. sturdier old wives tale right out the window.
I'll give you an example, for the same strength of material, plywood vs. polyethylene; polyethylene has 1/3 the weight but cost 4 times more. Aluminum and steel are similar. Obviously thicknesses and cross sections of materials are different to get equal strengths. That's why airplanes are made out of aluminum, carbon fiber, and other similar materials.
