Is there any relationship to weight vs a better build?
There doesn't have to be. Scamp, Casita, Lance, etc... have really good build quality and are also lightweight.
However, with most manufacturers it appears there's a correlation. (IMO, this is likely because people often expect smaller and lighter to cost less. If it's built to the same quality, it wouldn't cost less, so to meet the expectation the manufacturers make them cheaper.)

Are the building materials and methods getting better to where a lighter weight trailer can be just as structurally sound as one that weighs more, or is it in most cases, they're cutting corners to save weight to the point of you're towing nothing more that a flimsy shed behind your vehicle?
Building materials: Yes, they're getting better. (Slowly.)
Structurally sound: Yes, they can be quite structurally sound. See above for examples.
Also see above for caveats. While they CAN be built well, they often aren't.
That said, mine has been quite good. Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw.
