I have a story much like Dogs.
Years ago I didn't have any money (things haven't changed much :W) but needed a car trailer for my race car.
I was young and could weld really good so I decided to build my own. I also decided to design my own.
So over a period of months I built my own flat back car trailer. Took it down the road and man did that thing ever tow nice!!! So I loaded a car on it and tried it again. Again the thing towed SUPER nice!! I was so proud!
Flash forward about 15 years. Everybody that was somebody had an enclosed race car trailer. Wanting to be "someone" I decided to add a nice box on my existing trailer.
So after many more months of welding and work I have a beautiful enclosed car trailer. I took it out for a tow.
Much like Dogs trailer, (just not as bad) the trailer towed like junk!! I mean REALLY bad! I was like WTH???? All I did was put a box on it???
I sat down that night and went over my plans to figure out what is going on. I kept on coming back to the back door which was designed VERY heavy to hold the weight of the car loading and unloading.
BINGO!!!! Heavy door takes a lot of tongue weight off. To fix the problem I had to put a heavy work bench and all my tools in front of the trailer. I'm also going to put a gen set up there which weighs about 500 lbs.
So yes, I can relate to putting weight up front. The only difference is mine will be useful weight (tires, tools, gen set, ect) instead of dead ballast.
I'm in agreement with Dog. Be VERY carful and think this out before you take the ballast weight off of the front. There was more than likely a very reason the PO did this.
