We are a bit sheltered here in the US.
Sheltered? Because we don't have many different models that aim toward a niche market here? Let's face it, we don't really have much of a market for the heavy-duty off-road tow vehicles that are popular in Australia. Very limited use in the US. Which is why I posted the relative number of miles of paved road here versus Australia.
Look at a population density map of Australia, and notice the huge, I mean really huge, areas of very low population density. Now compare that to the US, and it becomes pretty evident why what works in Australia isn't really necessary here, except in a few instances. Here, those trucks would just be mostly posturing, like owning a Hummer.
You can be glad of what's available in your own country without feeling the need to try and feel that others are missing out because they don't have, or need, what you think is so wonderful. It's not superior, just different.
Pretty well summed up why US Pickups are not that very popular here, RAM Trucks Australia has had a very good year, they have had a 900% increase on sales they sold 1300YTD because of an effective marketing campaign. Put that into perspective the overall Pickup market was 215,000. On the site they have dropped the 3500( do not ask me why) RAM are mostly bought as lifestyle vehicles, mobile advertising and lastly Caravan Towers
