The issue I see here is that the OP made reservations only 3 days ahead of arrival for a very popular destination in prime season. While there were spacious sites in the camp, he did not get one of them. I think he was lucky to get a site at all.
as a camp owner, I assure you that the 'early bird' gets our best available, a drive in gets whats left . Camps evolve where they can to suit the growth in camper size. Space is related to cost. We've been to many a camp with big sites, but little to no other amenity and to camps with tight sites with many amenities for about the same daily site fee.
I do agree that the common concensus here in the forum is for more space, I also see that most of the posters clamoring for it are 'empty nesters'. Newbies with family and a smaller rig want the amenity ahead of site size, are relatively rare posters that prefer high amenity, so camps work to suit their demographics.
Cost to the camp levels out here. You got the big site, do not use the amenity, they got the small site, use all the camp has.
A word of advice I can give to RV shoppers is to consider the width of their drivers side slideouts. Trees, hookups, a neighbors awning is on that side. Where do you want your view out your windows? Your camp side, or his? Consider your place and way of usage before you buy.
My friend N, an earlier poster on this thread manages an entirely different type of camp than we have, has a very spacious camp with limited amenity geared toward working people. We found our visit in his camp to be most satisfactory for cost.
Well said and logical. To each his own.
I'll take more space and less or virtually no amenities.
And yes, I am a retired "empty nester," with slides.
