Popular usage doesn't make a thing correct.
It's like "fighter jets". It's a jet powered fighter, not a fighter powered jet.
Do we say locomotive diesel, engine steam, ship steam, pickup diesel, airliner jet? Why fighter jet instead of jet fighter?
