I don't know that it is any different than in a gas engine when you jump in and turn it on... except a gas engine ALWAYS revs up to 1100 rpms, whereas the diesel only does it when its really cold.
I have faith in the Cummins engineers to know what they are doing. They have a huge reputation at stake with these little diesels, I doubt they would intentionally harm them.
