It is not just about peak power and torque, it is about usable power and torque.
A 6.4L with 4.10 gears, 33 inch tires, and the torque converter locked, you would only be able to hit the peak 410 hp @ 5,600 rpm in the first two gears at a reasonable speed. In order for you to hit in 3rd you would have to be going 96 mph. Unlocking the torque converter will multiply torque, however, it will not multiple horsepower and you are not getting the engine's full power when it is unlocked therefore you are not getting all 410 hp to the wheels.
With a diesel's peak horsepower and torque being at a much lower rpm, you can utilize peak power in more gears at reasonable speeds that you would normally drive or tow in. This makes the diesel's peak numbers more usable.
