In some vehicles, the air dam is also to direct enough air to the engine radiator for cooling purposes. Although, with the temps newer engines run at, I am amazed that they don't cook. There seems to be no place for the air to go after picking up heat from the radiator and A/C condenser. But yes! I have scraped my "dam" dam on brush and when going thru erosion ditches off road.
