Butch50,
I sure like the foldup platform idea you had installed. Mainly, that if the only thing needed is a reasonable sized platform to step on closer to the ground is what's desired. I don't like the idea of the bumper clamp/mounting flanges and bolts inhibiting the full opening/use of the two compartment doors behind those flanges. There are better ways to have made/located the joint.
Our needs are different as we have a 16 X 22 X 15 inch lockable storage box on one side of the door on our carpeted porch and the folding drop step to the ground is on the passenger's side end so it's like a side entry type camper. The neat storage box carries our Coleman fold down propane grill unit, 30 amp ext cord plus 50' 20 amp and a 25' 15 amp cord, the water hoses, 6 leveling 2X10's and the other molded plastic leveling ramps we use, etc. The box's hinged cover exterior has an aluminun angle framed solar shield Formica top that serves as a place to sit or put the grill on to use or as a table for snacks/drinks/etc or a smaller type table to eat from as our chairs can go right up to it. Stop and use anywhere as a picnic table is not required at all! My porches are designed and built to carry the loaded box plus a min of 500 lb tounge weight on the porch rear mounted 2" dia ball in it'd receiver or our bike carrier with 2 bikes on it. Yes, I replaced the OEM 2" truck receiver with a Tow Beast 2-1/2" receiver rated at 1000 lb tongue wt and 10,000 lb tow wt. Works fantastic with either a Ford HD pickup or a GM HD pickup carrying a TC.
Very easy for me to design as I'm a retired mechanical discilpine engineer of about 40 years experience with automotive, mainly pickup trucks, vans, and SUV's. Also because I have a complete fabricating machine shop at our main home and besides, even though long retired, I love designing and making very special things for us to enjoy. Mostly the things you can't buy or if you can they are cheap quality and usually very flimsey.
