"Check Engine" light can be set off by almost anything. It could be something as simple as an air lock in your gas tank (just remove the gas cap and put it back on) or as messy as a blown engine.
My car recently had the "Check Engine" light come on. I couldn't get it to go off. I even went so far as to check the pressure in my tires! Finally, took it to the shop, they attached their machine, and it was an Oxygen Sensor, whatever that is. Warranty fixed it, absolutely no charge.
Take it to a shop, you won't be able to turn it off. And if the problem is not fixed, it will just come back on again anyway, even if you could turn it off.
