DC Charging with Genny

Had this crazy idea…I was toying with purchasing the DC charge cable for the Honda 2k…which only charges at 8 amps.
Then I thought; if truck batteries died…you would be better off to run the TC off the genny and jumper cables from the TC battery to the truck as the charger/converter in the TC is 55 amps.
Does this make sense?

  • I mounted a charger under the hood for times when I would not be driving for a while or if I did something stupid and left lights on.

Not the fastest charger to charge from dead but all you need in an emergency is to get enough power to turn it over and if that does not work I carry jumper cables that I could go from the camper to the truck.

  • Jumper cable will be better, but the best will be a automotive style charger, plugged in to generator.
  • That 12v outlet on the EU2000 would be okay to use in an emergency to push a charge into a battery, but it is unregulated so you have a high probability of cooking the battery unless you monitor carefully.

Yah, assuming you mean the 120v side of the genny.

I use my 2KW Honda Generator all the time to charge my 30A Trailer batteries but plugging the trailer 30A shore power cable directly into the generator 120VAC receptacle using a RV30A-15A "dogbone" long adapter. You can pick one of these adapters up from WALMART.

This will allow your on-board converter/charger unit to re-charge your trailer battery. If your on-board converter/charger unit is a smart mode technology then you can re-charge your trailer battery in a three hour generator run time.

If you do not have a smart mode converter/charger unit then its best to pick up a smart mode portable charger like the Black and Decker VEC1093DBD 40AMP portable charger and plug this into the 2KW Generator 120VAC receptacle and use the portable charger battery cables direct connected to your trailer battery.

The 8AMP connector on the 2kW Honda Generator is way to small of DC AMPS OUTPUT to re-charge your trailer battery. It would take days to complete the process...

  • Do you have a separate battery for the camper?
Is it isolated from the truckers battery? If no you should install an isolation relay, then you don't have to worry about the truck battery going dead.
I would be charging using the genset through the converter to charge the camper battery.
